Two needle-punch carpets can have the same GSM and still look, feel and perform differently. They can also have a similar thickness while containing different amounts of fibre, binder or backing material.
This is why a professional quotation should not be compared on GSM alone. Importers, distributors and project buyers need to confirm what the quoted GSM includes, how thickness is measured and which other construction details are controlled.
Quick answer: GSM measures mass per unit area. Thickness measures the vertical dimension of the carpet under a defined measuring method. Neither value, by itself, proves product quality or suitability for a particular application.
The basic calculation is:
GSM = sample mass in grams ÷ sample area in square metres
The arithmetic is simple; obtaining a representative and comparable result is not. Sample location, product conditioning, permanent backing, temporary film and the agreed production tolerance can all affect how a reported value should be interpreted.
What Does GSM Mean in Needle-Punch Carpet?
GSM means grams per square metre. It describes how much material is present over one square metre, but the quotation must identify exactly which material layer or finished construction is being weighed.
Depending on the supplier, product and production stage, a quoted GSM may refer to:
- the needle-punched fibre web before finishing;
- the carpet after binder application and oven drying;
- the complete product including a permanent backing; or
- another agreed production-control basis.
These values are not automatically interchangeable. A buyer should therefore avoid writing only “500 GSM carpet” in an RFQ. A clearer instruction is:
Target total mass per unit area: 500 g/m², measured on the finished carpet without temporary protective film, subject to the agreed tolerance and test method.
The wording must match the actual product and purchasing agreement. If a permanent backing is included, state that clearly. If a removable protective film is supplied for installation, record it separately rather than allowing it to obscure the carpet specification.
The official scope of ISO 8543:2020 distinguishes between total mass per unit area, total pile mass per unit area and pile mass above the substrate. This distinction illustrates why the basis of a GSM value must be defined before quotations are compared.
What Does Carpet Thickness Measure?
Thickness describes the vertical distance through the carpet construction when measured according to an agreed procedure. It is normally stated in millimetres.
Thickness may be influenced by:
- fibre fineness and crimp;
- web formation and fibre distribution;
- needling density and penetration;
- surface structure, such as plain, ribbed or velour;
- binder application and drying;
- compression during winding and storage; and
- any permanent backing or laminated layer.
ISO 1765:1986 provides a method for determining the thickness of machine-made textile floor coverings. Importantly, ISO states that the thickness result by itself cannot be used as an indication of product quality.
That point matters commercially: a thicker sample is not automatically a better carpet, and a denser carpet is not automatically unsuitable because it measures slightly thinner.
GSM and Thickness Are Not Interchangeable

Consider two simplified examples:
- A relatively open fibre web may appear thicker at a given GSM, while a more strongly consolidated web at the same GSM may be thinner and firmer.
- Binder or backing can add mass to the finished construction without producing a proportional increase in visible surface thickness.
Neither example establishes which carpet is “better”. The correct choice depends on the application, required appearance, installation method, traffic, packing plan and any specified test result.
A Simple Quotation Comparison Example
Suppose two quotations both state “500 GSM needle-punch carpet”:
- Quotation A: 500 g/m² for the finished carpet after binder application, without temporary protective film.
- Quotation B: 500 g/m² for the needle-punched fibre web before binder or backing.
The two prices are not directly comparable. Quotation B may contain additional finished-product mass that is not shown in its headline GSM figure. The products may also differ in surface structure, stiffness, thickness and packing yield.
Before choosing either offer, ask both suppliers to restate the value on the same basis and provide the agreed tolerance. Then compare the complete constructions against approved samples.
Why Quotations With the Same GSM Can Be Different
Fibre specification
PET and polypropylene fibres, different fibre finenesses and different blends do not build the same web in the same way. Fibre properties influence loft, consolidation, surface appearance and processing behaviour.
Needling parameters
Needle type, penetration, stroke frequency and line configuration affect how the fibre web is mechanically consolidated. A GSM figure does not describe these settings.
Surface construction
Plain, ribbed, velour, jacquard and printed surfaces should not be compared using mass alone. Surface profile and finishing change both appearance and measurement behaviour.
Binder and backing
After needle punching, some carpet constructions are impregnated or coated with a binder and then oven-dried. Other products may receive PVC, TPE/TPR, felt or another backing. Buyers must confirm whether these layers are included in the quoted mass.
Production tolerance
A target without a tolerance is incomplete. The order should define the accepted production range, the sampling method and what happens if an individual result or batch average falls outside the agreement.
Which Value Matters Most for Different Applications?
Exhibition and event carpet
For PET exhibition carpet, GSM is often a primary commercial reference, but buyers should also confirm fibre, width, roll length, surface, binder, protective film, installation conditions and any required flame test.

Entrance mats and corridor runners
For entrance products, the complete construction is more important than a single mass figure. Surface texture, dirt and moisture management, backing, edge treatment, mat stability, cleaning and subfloor conditions should be evaluated together.
Automotive and converting materials
Automotive or downstream-converting buyers may need tighter control of thickness, roll uniformity, mouldability, surface appearance or lamination compatibility. The correct control points depend on the next production process.
General needle-punch flooring
For needle-punch flooring rolls, confirm the expected traffic, installation method and maintenance plan before selecting a weight or thickness range.
A Better RFQ Checklist
Before requesting samples or comparing quotations, send the following information:
- Application: exhibition, event, entrance, corridor, automotive, industrial or downstream converting.
- Fibre: PET, polypropylene or the required blend.
- Mass basis: fibre web, finished carpet or complete backed product.
- Target GSM and tolerance: not only a nominal number.
- Thickness and measurement basis: where thickness affects installation, conversion or clearance.
- Surface: plain, ribbed, velour, printed, jacquard or another structure.
- Backing or binder: construction, required function and whether its mass is included.
- Roll dimensions: width, length and accepted tolerances.
- Colour and consistency: standard colour, custom colour or approved reference.
- Testing: identify the exact standard, classification and issuing requirement.
- Packing: film wrapping, woven bag, labels, pallet or container-loading plan.
- Quantity and destination: required quantity per colour and destination country.
For a purchase contract or approved specification sheet, also record:
- whether acceptance is based on individual readings, an agreed average or both;
- where and how production samples will be taken;
- whether removable protective film is excluded from the carpet mass;
- the reference sample number and approval date; and
- which results will be checked before shipment.
Physical test results are only useful when the specimen represents the supplied material. ISO 1957:2000 addresses the selection and cutting of specimens for physical tests and notes the importance of agreeing the sampling method between interested parties.
How to Compare Supplier Samples Correctly
Use the same comparison basis for every supplier:
- condition the samples consistently before measurement;
- identify whether the sample came from trial production or normal bulk production;
- measure more than one position where appropriate;
- compare the approved construction, not just colour and hand feel;
- keep a signed or coded reference sample;
- record GSM, thickness, width, surface, backing and packing requirements together; and
- confirm which values will be checked again during bulk production.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a higher GSM needle-punch carpet always better?
No. A higher mass may be appropriate for some constructions, but suitability also depends on fibre, needling, surface, binder or backing, installation and required performance. More mass does not automatically mean better value.
Can I compare carpet prices by GSM alone?
Only when every quotation uses the same mass basis and the remaining construction is genuinely comparable. Otherwise, the lowest price per GSM may represent a different surface, backing, tolerance or production standard.
Should an RFQ include both GSM and thickness?
Include both when thickness affects installation, clearance, conversion or the desired construction. For other products, GSM may be the primary control value, but the complete specification is still required.
Does binder count toward GSM?
It depends on the stated measurement basis. If the quotation refers to the finished carpet after binder application, binder mass may be included. If it refers to the fibre web before finishing, it is not. The RFQ and quotation should state the basis explicitly.
Why does a roll sometimes feel thinner after packing?
Winding pressure, packing and storage can temporarily compress the construction. Measurement and acceptance conditions should therefore be agreed rather than judged only by immediate hand feel after opening a roll.
The Practical Buying Rule
Do not ask only, “What is the GSM?” Ask:
What does the GSM include, what tolerance applies, how is thickness measured, and which approved construction will control bulk production?
That question produces more comparable quotations and reduces disputes during sampling, production and repeat orders.
